Frequently Asked Questions

PARADE FAQ

Is this a parade on land or on the river?

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

The land parade route is a .5 mile loop along Kingsland’s shoreline.  The terrain is paved, grass and dirt trail with low roots.

If you want to join the water mermaids, who will launch from the beach at Kingsland, head to Rivertown SUP and Yoga to register.

I have questions about the water parade…

Please go to (insert Tara)

What do I wear?

We encourage wild, wacky, creative costuming! This is a family-friendly event, so please come fully clothed. We also ask that participants be mindful that costumes are secure to minimize the chance of litter or plastic pollution. And remember to wear sunscreen–mermaids burn easily!

Do I have to dress up as a Mermaid?

We welcome all aquatic creatures living in and on the Hudson River: from mythical marine life to actual aquatics, plundering pirates like Sleepy Hollow’s legendary Captain Kidd, and even some shy sailors.

Can I bring my...

Kids? YES
Grandma? YES
Dog? YES (must be leashed)
Friend from the city? YES (MTA train stop at Philipse Manor is a 5 min walk to the festival!)
Canary? NO. Mermaids don't like birds.
Wagons? Strollers and wagons are great to have on hand for younger mermaids, and can be fun to decorate. To keep everyone at the same pace, please don’t bring motorized scooters and the like, apart from motorized accessibility aids.

Do I have to march in the parade?

There will be plenty of room for spectators along the parade route, and you won’t want to miss the festival after!

Anything else I should bring?

Reusable water bottles! Hydration is important, and we are looking to avoid single-use plastics. If there’s a creative way to incorporate an umbrella in your costume, consider bringing it for shade while you march.

Is there public transportation?

We encourage using public transportation. The closest Metronorth train stop is Philipsburg Manor. The Tarrytown station is approx 1.5 mile walk along the river to Kingsland Point Park.

Will there be parking?

Limited paid parking is available at Kingsland Point Park. Fee is cash only.  We recommend coming early for this option. Street parking is available outside the park but limited.

GENERAL FAQ

Why Mermaids?

Sleepy Hollow Country is known for its myths and lore.  Mystical sightings are not limited to land, and beneath the murky waters of the Hudson River is a story that is only beginning to unfold. Find out more at the festival!

We want to see a clean, vibrant Hudson for both fish and people.

Is this event part of the Coney Island Mermaid Parade?

We love the Coney Island Mermaid Parade, and hope you attend it in June! This festival is a separate entity in partnership with Riverkeeper, and the Village of Sleepy Hollow.

We will be dressing up, and on parade in the spirit of a healthy hudson river.  For those who have attended Coney Island Mermaid Parade, this will be much less boardwalk burlesque and more rustic, river vibes.
